Are plastic fences any good?
Choosing a fence material tends to rely on several factors. A plastic fence is a good solution from a maintenance standpoint in normal conditions because plastic does not biodegrade like wood. Over the years, manufacturers of plastic fences (typically vinyl or PVC) have improved style and color options. However, there are several disadvantages to plastic that a consumer ought to consider. Plastic fences are usually made of fairly thin material which makes them susceptible to damage. Plastic also does not do well in extreme elements such as hot, sunny climates or high wind areas. From an aesthetic standpoint, plastic fences do not have a natural appearance that can detract from the beauty of a landscaped property. The fact that the material is typically made from new plastic and will not biodegrade also has implications for sustainability. A better option for plastic fences is a composite, such as Trex. The Trex fencing systems have the benefits of plastic because the composite material includes plastic, but the thicker, more durable material is more natural-looking and it performs well in extreme climates. Additionally, the plastic in Trex comes completely from recycled sources, making it the most environmentally friendly option in fencing.
