How deep should a fence post hole be?

A fence post hole should be deep enough to ensure the post won't be displaced by wind or other forces in normal conditions. For a 6-foot tall privacy fence, that depth will usually be at least 24" and can exceed 36" if the area where the fence is installed has a deep frost line. Our installation guide recommends a depth of at least 30'' for a 6'H fence.

Typically, your fence installer will know the best depth for a fence post in your particular area since soil and climate can have a dramatic impact on the best depth. Most municipalities have guidance or requirements. Check the permit requirements in your area to see if this is the case. The city or county building and planning departments oftentimes can also provide advice on post hole depth.
